Patrick Mahomes was ready for a drastic change after the Kansas City Chiefs’ heartbreaking loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl. The star quarterback was so affected by the defeat that he considered shaving off “all” his hair—until his longtime barber, DeJuan Bonds, intervened.
Bonds, who has been cutting Mahomes’ hair for years, revealed in an interview with Us Weekly that he had to talk the 29-year-old quarterback out of making an impulsive decision while still processing the emotional aftermath of the game.
“The whole time that I’ve been cutting his hair, he just lets me do what I do,” Bonds explained. “But when he asked for a change, he basically was like, ‘Just cut me all off.’”
Rather than immediately going through with the drastic chop, Bonds convinced Mahomes to take a more measured approach.
“I was like, ‘No, no, no. We’re not just going to cut it all off,’” he recalled. “We’re actually going to collab on this and go a little bit at a time, take it a little bit down. We kind of came to a common ground like, ‘OK, this is the cut, this is the length.’ It was a collaboration on this last one.”
In the end, Mahomes opted to part ways with his signature mohawk in favor of a cleaner, cropped look.

A New Look, A Fresh Start
The quarterback debuted his new hairstyle in mid-February at his grandfather’s funeral, marking his first public appearance following the Super Bowl loss. The transformation was met with mixed reactions from fans, but Bonds assured that both he and Mahomes were pleased with the final result.
Although Mahomes initially stepped back from the spotlight after the season ended, he reemerged on Monday night for a date night with his wife, Brittany Mahomes. The couple, who have been together since high school and married in 2022, attended a college basketball game between Texas Tech—Patrick’s alma mater—and Houston.
Sitting courtside, Mahomes sported his fresh haircut along with a red-and-black varsity jacket in support of the Red Raiders. Unfortunately for him, Texas Tech suffered a loss, adding yet another tough defeat to his recent experiences.
Fans quickly took to social media to react to Mahomes’ new look, with many believing it could signal a dominant return next season.
“Dude chopped the hawk, the league is cooked,” one fan wrote on Instagram. Another commented, “The return gonna be epic.”
Brittany, for her part, also showed off her school spirit, wearing black jeans and a cropped red coat. The couple appeared to enjoy their evening out, leaving their three children—Sterling, 4, Bronze, 2, and newborn Golden—at home for the night.

A Symbolic Reset?
For many athletes, a haircut can symbolize a fresh start, and for Mahomes, this change could represent a renewed focus heading into the next NFL season.
While the sting of the Super Bowl loss still lingers, the Chiefs’ franchise player is already looking ahead—one trim at a time.
