Residents said they heard a “loud boom” seconds before smoke began billowing from the Manhattan rooftop
A fire on the rooftop of an apartment building sent plumes of smoke billowing in the air on a residential street in New York City on Friday morning.
Video shared on social media showed thick black smoke rising in the air near apartment buildings on East 95th Street on the Upper East Side in Manhattan. There have so far been no reports of injuries.
Residents in high rises watched as a fire burned on the roof of a nearby building. Concerned residents said they heard a “loud boom” seconds before embers erupted from the rooftop.
According to the FDNY, residents called to report a fire on the building’s roof at 10:04 a.m.
More than 100 fire officials and EMS personnel arrived at the scene. FDNY said the incident was classified as a 3-alarm fire.
Photos taken after the fire was contained showed it had burned through a portion of the roof.
Crews are currently trying to contain the fire, which was escalated to a third alarm at 11:06 a.m. The rooftop appeared littered with debris.
The smoke is poised to remain in the area for a while, fire officials warned. Commuters were advised to brace for traffic delays and residents were told to keep their windows closed for the next few hours.
