Bill Belichick made sure to let North Carolina fans know that he is committed to building a winner with the Tar Heels.
Earlier in December, Belichick made waves after it was announced that the legendary head coach was taking his talents to the collegiate level, taking UNC’s head coaching position. However, Belichick’s contract with the Tar Heels contained a unique clause that allows him to return to the NFL.
Theoretically speaking, the 72-year-old could potentially leave the Tar Heels before he even coaches one game for UNC. That said, the legendary head coach made it clear he would be investing in the team long term, posting an image on social media to let fans know of his intentions.
In a photo posted to Instagram captioned “Best, BB,” the image shows the legendary head coach’s letter to Santa Clause. “Dear Santa!” the letter began. “My name is Bill Belichick. I live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This year I have been nice. For Christmas this year I would like to have 1. Great players who want to help me build a winning football program at UNC. (My DMs are open).
“2. UNC Alumni, fans & supporters who want to help me build a winning football program at UNC. Thank you, Santa! Happy Holidays!” While the photo is a tongue-in-cheek reference to those who believed Belichick will leave UNC before coaching a game, the head coach is doing what he could to make sure fans are on board.
Even with Belichick’s post, there are some around the league that believe the former New England Patriots head coach could potentially return to the NFL sooner rather than later. One of those is Colin Cowherd, who believes Belichick could end up coaching the Philadelphia Eagles or the Buffalo Bills.
“Here’s my hottest take… If Philadelphia loses in the first round or the second round, Bill Belichick can get out of his contract this July [2025],” Cowherd said on ‘The Herd.’ “Belichick already got his kid at Carolina to be the DC. Why did Carolina allow Belichick to have that? Because Belichick knows there are two jobs that are fascinating – Philly and Buffalo.”
Along with Cowherd, NFL analyst Chris Simms also believes Belichick’s clause makes it more likely for him to leave UNC than to stay long-term. “Do I believe hes going to stay there long? Absolutely not,” Simms said.
“I mean, the buyout tells you everything. Starting this June, he can be bought out for couch cushion change for NFL owners. I mean, come on, a million dollars? Belichick has got a million dollars in cash he can put in his pocket and pay that off. Thats nothing; hes worth hundreds of millions.”
“So, yeah, am I shocked hes going to college? Definitely. Did I think thered be a team out there that would latch onto Belichick? I did think that. But Im not shocked that the NFL rejected Belichick.”
