The next chapter in the rebooted DC Universe is finally making its comeback this week and critics have been raving about it universally.
James Gunn’s Peacemaker, featuring John Cena as the flag-waving anti-hero, is finally dropping on HBO Max today (Thursday, August 21).
Initially debuting in 2022, the hit superhero series is returning after an extended hiatus and is building on the director’s blockbuster Superman with thrills, laughs and major reveals aplenty.
Season two tracks Chris Smith, aka Peacemaker, as he flees from Rick Flag Sr (played by Frank Grillo) while uncovering an alternate reality where he gets the opportunity to experience the ideal existence.
Only five episodes of the new season were distributed to media for critiques, as Gunn cautions there are some huge revelations approaching in the concluding episodes he wants to maintain under strict secrecy, reports the Mirror.
The creator quipped to reporter Brandon Davis: “It could mean they’re terrible. That is one option. Or it could mean that there’s a lot of major twists and turns in the last three episodes.
“And even though I’m sending the first five to a select few, things still get out as you know. Things got out already. You know, people who want to search can be spoiled on purpose, but I really don’t want what’s in those last three episodes to be spoiled.
“And so I’m keeping them close to the chest. I won’t even let my publicist see them. That’s the god’s honest truth.”
Fortunately, the opening five episodes are strong enough to earn rave reviews from critics, securing an amazing 98 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Nerdist declared: “Peacemaker continues to kill it as a wildly entertaining, funny, emotional story with great, complex characters and themes.”
Comicbook.com concurred: “Peacemaker season two has the same flood of heart as Superman, is another excellent exercise in world-building, and by virtue of feeling more like a pure expression of Gunn as a creator, I’d confidently say it’s the better of the two.”
Screen Rant chimed in: “Peacemaker season two recaptures everything that made season one so special, but it tells a whole new story with a surprisingly great multiversal twist.”
Finally, Empire gushed: “Anchored by great work from John Cena, Peacemaker’s second season raises its already high bar with a well-judged blend of heart, madness, and an a**-kicking eagle.”
