Breaking News: Heartbreak at Royal Ascot as Champion Trainer William Haggas Confronts Unexpected Setback with Star Horse Merchant
Trainer William Haggas had high hopes for the 115-rated son of Teofilo, aiming to guide him into the prestigious Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The Niel is one of three trials taking place that day, all offering a free supplementary entry as part of the Arc Races series. However, it seems that those aspirations will now need to be shelved, prompting a necessary reassessment of Merchant’s future. It’s particularly disheartening for Herbert to ponder the scarcity of horses with such exceptional talent, as he lamented, “I’ve had horses with William for probably more than 35 years, and I haven’t had a horse who he’s been more excited about.”
Merchant had made great strides in his career, finishing third in a Newmarket handicap off a mark of 82 when the entries for the Arc closed in May. His potential had been increasingly evident, having won at the York Dante meeting, alongside triumphant performances in the King George V Handicap at Ascot and the Group 3 Gordon Stakes at Goodwood.
Looking ahead with hope, Herbert mentioned the encouraging feedback he has received, including a heartfelt email from one shareholder. This message celebrated the incredible experiences they have already enjoyed during Merchant’s brief but illustrious career, particularly his victories at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood. “The thrill and the expectation have been very special,” he reflected. Despite the current gloom, he holds onto the belief that time will heal. “Hopefully, he will recover so we can see him back in action next season,” he concluded optimistically.
Adding to the silver lining, Merchant’s impressive form has been underscored during his absence, with the Ascot runner-up, Serious Contender, finishing impressively behind Lambourn in the Irish Derby, while Wimbledon Hawkeye, who took second in the Gordon Stakes, secured a valued invitational race at Kentucky Downs last weekend. This series of performances underscores the immense promise that Merchant showcased on the track, reaffirming the hope for his eventual return to racing.
