Steelers-Ravens delay, explained: Drone sighting briefly pauses wild-card playoff game image

The Steelers were looking to regain momentum during the second half of Saturday night’s playoff game against the Ravens when the contest entered into an unusual delay.

One play into Pittsburgh’s drive, officials briefly paused the game without explanation, leaving fans wondering whether Mike Tomlin or John Harbaugh used an early timeout.

Once the game did resume, the Steelers took advantage and went 59 yards in just four plays to score a much-needed touchdown and cut Baltimore’s lead back to two possessions.

Here’s a look at why the game was paused and how the Ravens have experienced this situation before.

Why was Steelers-Ravens game delayed?

Saturday’s game was briefly delayed because of a drone sighting above the stadium, the Amazon Prime Video broadcast reported. The drone never entered the stadium, but NFL policy requires a game to be stopped in the event of a drone sighting.

The FBI’s Baltimore division reaffirmed before the game that the area around M&T Bank Stadium is a “No Drone Zone,” though that didn’t stop someone from flying a drone a bit too close to the venue.

The Ravens have dealt with drone issues in the past, as two games at M&T Bank Stadium were delayed due to drone sightings last season — including Baltimore’s AFC championship game loss to the Chiefs.

Saturday’s game quickly picked back up, with the Steelers resuming a drive that would end in a highlight-reel touchdown from George Pickens. Harbaugh would like to avoid the same pattern of events his team experienced in Super Bowl 47 when a power outage delayed the game and helped spark a 49ers comeback that fell just short but put a scare into the Ravens on their way to a championship.
