The New York Jets could face one of their lone superstar players wanting to be traded away this offseason, with wide receiver Garrett Wilson reportedly taking issue with Aaron Rodgers being his quarterback. Despite being set for career numbers with Rodgers under center this season, Wilson is said to be unhappy about the veteran potentially returning for the 2025 season and could even force a trade if that is the case.
Speaking on NFL Network, reporter Ian Rapoport stated that Wilson could ask for a trade after venting his frustrations about not being able to click with Rodgers. According to Rapoport, Wilson is said to be angered in recent weeks after getting open but not seeing the ball come his way.
Wilson has been openly frustrated with his lack of targets throughout the season, a trend that has intensified with the mid-year acquisition of Rodgers’ former Packers teammate Davante Adams.
Earlier this month, Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich had agreed with the receiver that they must find a way to make him the go-to target. He said: At the end of the day, weve got to find ways to get Garrett the ball more often. Hes one of the best players on our team, if not one of the best players in this league, especially at his position.
Despite him being angered with his lack of opportunities, Wilson still looks set to amass 1,100 receiving yards while having six touchdowns on the year – both career-highs.
Wilson will be eligible for a contract extension after this season, but will seemingly be unlikely to agree to one should Rodgers remain as the quarterback.
Rodgers is set to be under contract through the 2025 season, but the Jets can cut him and spread his salary cap for the next few years – eating a $14 million dead cap this year and $7 million for the following two years.
The Jets might find it difficult to find a replacement for Rodgers this offseason, potentially having to trade up to acquire one of Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward in the draft, while also maybe looking to swing a trade for quarterbacks such as Will Levis or Hendon Hooker, who are likely to become available.
