The Phoenix Suns’ interest in trading for Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler is “absolutely genuine,” according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
The Suns would need veteran shooting guard Bradley Beal to waive his no-trade clause in order to complete the deal, although Stein noted that “there is scant evidence” Miami is willing to swap Butler for Beal without additional assets included.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Tuesday that Phoenix was among the teams “atop” Butler’s list if he were to be moved by the Heat.
Charania also mentioned the Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets as potential suitors for the six-time All-Star.
Beal was asked about trade rumors by reporters on Friday, explaining that they aren’t something he gives much thought to.
“I’m a Phoenix Sun, and I’m here, and I’m in a uniform,” Beal said. “I don’t pay attention to that, man… they did that with me for 10 years.”
Butler’s looming $52.4 million player option for the 2025-26 season has made his future in Miami murky, as the Heat could explore a trade instead of watching the forward potentially leave as a free agent at the end of his 2024-25 campaign.
Beal’s $50.2 million salary this season allows both teams to swap players, but the remainder of his contract may cause trade partners to hesitate before acquiring him. The 31-year-old carries a $53.7 million cap hit next year and also owns a $57.1 million player option for the 2026-27 season, per Spotrac.
He would also need to waive his no-trade clause to make the deal happen, with Brett Siegel of Clutch Points reporting on Friday that there are “zero indications” he would be willing to do so.
The Suns appeared to remain interested in Butler, but there are still several hurdles to clear before reaching a possible agreement with the Heat prior to the Feb. 6 trade deadline.
