Viktor Hovland has revealed he has suffered a freak toe injury which could well leave him sidelined from the beginning of the 2025 PGA Tour season.
Hovland took to social media on Friday to reveal a toe injury, sharing an X-ray scan of what appeared to be a break to his right pinky. From his caption the Norwegian looks to have picked up the problem by stumping his toe on a bed frame, writing: “Bed frame 1 – 0 me.”
The injury comes at a problematic time for Hovland, with the beginning of the 2025 PGA Tour campaign set to get underway next week at the annual season opener at The Sentry.
As things stand, it remains to be seen if Hovland’s injury will rule him out from competing, with his name still on the tournament entry list as of Dec. 28. One man who will not be at the event in Hawaii though is FedEx Cup champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
Like Hovland, he too suffered a freak injury over the festive period, after a piece of broken glass got stuck in his hand on Christmas Day. In a statement earlier this week, Scheffler’s manager confirmed that the injury would ensure he would miss the opening three to four weeks of the campaign.
Manager Blake Smith said: “On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass. Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery. He has been told that he should be back to 100 percent in three to four weeks.
“Unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from The Sentry. His next scheduled tournament is The American Express (scheduled for January 16-19).” Scheffler’s withdrawal was also confirmed by the PGA Tour. “World No. 1 and 2024 FedEx Cup Champion Scottie Scheffler has withdrawn from the PGA Tours 2025 season-opening tournament, The Sentry, which will take place next week, 2-5 January at The Plantation Course at Kapalua in Maui, Hawaii,” the Tour confirmed.
Scheffler’s injury comes on the back of another incredible year for the New Jersey native, who won nine times in 2024, including the Masters and Olympic gold. The same however can not be said for Hovland, who failed to build on his best season to date a year earlier.
In 2023, Hovland clinched the PGA Tour’s top prize winning the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup title at East Lake. Big things were expected in the year following, however, the European failed to recapture his form in 2024, having failed to get back in the winners’ circle after winning three times the year before.
In total the 27-year-old star played in 28 events on the PGA Tour in 2024, but only broke into the top 10 on two occasions, finishing third at the PGA Championship and tied second at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
