WNBA star Natasha Cloud let her thoughts known on Elon Musk and other billionaires after a bill was passed to prevent the impending government shutdown.
The original bipartisan deal to prevent a government shutdown was 1,547 pages long and contained measures some Republicans found unimportant, including health care policy provisions and legislation aimed at turning RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. to a space that could host a multitude of events.
However, Musk and President-elect Donald Trump led a group that threatened to force out any lawmaker who did not support them. That led to Cloud’s response on social media, which she posted on the platform Musk owns and operates.
“So when y’all gone tell Elon to go back to Africa?” Cloud posted on X. Along with positing her question, the Mercury star posted more context to what she wrote.
“I’m so glad ALL these billionaires have no idea how the 3 branches of government work…. or how a bill gets passed into law. Shoutout to the 38 Republicans who shot the bill down in the house while being threatened & blackmailed.” And while Cloud was voicing her opinion, some replied to the star as to why they believed the situation played out the way it did.
“Natasha, unfortunately you have no idea how corrupt the government is and has been,” one commenter posted in response. “And, you obviously have no clue why 38 Republicans voted NO. You many consider some due diligence before you comment next time. I’ll give you a hint: Debt Ceiling.”
Interestingly, there has been some chatter regarding just how much influence Musk has over the president-elect heading into his next term. While Trump originally was in favor of the original bill, the 78-year-old quick changed his tune after Musk shared his opposition.
Since then, Trump and Musk have seemingly been in close contact regarding what should be done with regards to government bills. Along with the duo’s opposition to the original bill, Trump also urged for the inclusion of a debt ceiling extension, posting that he believes now is the time to do so.
“If Democrats won’t cooperate on a debt ceiling increase now, what makes anyone think they would do it in June during our administration?” Trump posted. “Let’s have this debate over the debt ceiling now.” However, Trump’s suggestion was shot down in a House vote just hours later.
Democrats have been opposing how much power Musk has wielded so far. Democratic Rep. from California Robert Garcia wrote on X: “Welcome to the Elon Musk presidency.”
Additionally, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre gave a scathing explanation of the situation, aimed specifically at Republicans who torpedoed the bipartisan bill. Republicans are breaking their word to support a bipartisan agreement that would lower prescription drug costs and make it harder to offshore jobs to China and instead putting forward a bill that paves the way for tax breaks for billionaires while cutting critical programs working families count on, from Social Security to Head Start, she said.
“President Biden supports the bipartisan agreement to keep the government open, help communities recovering from disasters, and lower costs not this giveaway for billionaires that Republicans are proposing at the 11th hour.
